The stacked house is an exercise in geometric simplicity. The concept was to design alternate stacking geometric blocks that rotate 90 degrees as they move up vertically. This creates a simple relationship between the main and second floor while maximizing open spaces on the exterior and strengthen the relationships to the living spaces. The entry and carport are covered with the second floor and third level roof covers the roof deck while other outdoor spaces remain open to the sky allowing south light to bounce into the main interior spaces. The simplicity also drove the goal of creating a simple envelope so the energy efficiency could be maximized. This home reached a coveted 5-Star Built Green Level (LEED Platinum equivalent) status. This is achieved by building a tight thermal envelope and by using high efficiency windows, coupled with a super efficient Ductless heat pump and Hydronic Floor Heating system with an HRV for balanced ventilation. The house reached a super low blower door test of .9 ACH at 50 Pa.
