The Mini-Z Backyard Cottage provided students of the Wood Technology Center an opportunity to build a high-performance enclosure in an educational setting with top notch instructors, industry suppliers and professionals offering timely guidance. The build project began in 2018 and was finished up two years later when it was relocated as a fully approved and permitted manufacture housing unit.
Since September of 2020 mini-Z provides AirBnB guests a unique chance to experience the air quality and thermal comfort of Passive House performance while they visit Seattle, family or friends. It is always a a treat to read comments and feedback from visitors about their experience.
Mini-Z is a “manufactured home” 420 sf modular unit, raised to a second level and supported by a site-built lower level adding a second bedroom, second bathroom, laundry room and garage, replacing a garage that was located on the same footprint with alley access. The completed two floor, two bedroom two bath units totals 800sf not including the garage.
The NW Green Home Tour provides an opportunity for public access to check out some of the key factors that allow this to be a low energy small dwelling.
